Tablet n00b,
I’ll preface my review by saying that I have never seen any other tablet computer so this is not a comparative review by any stretch.
I have been told repeatedly that I must have a tablet and that it will make my life easier. As a person naturally opposed to frivolous expense, the case had to be made repeatedly and even then, I would not consider the more expensive variants.
I eventually decided to plump for the Tabtronics WM8650 as it seemed to be rather similar to my samsung phone (galaxy s) which I get on rather well with.
The device was mildly confusing to set up considering that I know nothing about these things and I am still uncertain as to what to do with the mini-sd card it came with as leaving it in seems to reset the device every time I turn it off and on, HOWEVER, that said, having removed it, I am very pleased with the tablet. Again, I reiterate that I have nothing to compare it to but to me it seems to be responsive and does indeed fill the gap between laptop pc and mobile phone. With little experience, I have easily configured my pop3 email accounts and set up various “apps” as well as internet favourites and device settings. One app, rather invaluably, allows me to secure certain areas of the tablet with a password whilst still allowing a third party to use the unsecured areas. This is great for handing the device over to the kids without them accessing my email or the device settings.
The touch screen seems unresponsive to my Samsung habits but perfectly serviceable and I am driven to remind the reader of the price point of this device… a similar Samsung or Apple device would cost vastly more.
It is solid in the hand and a comforting weight but battery life is something of a let down. It tends to last approximately 90 minutes to two hours in what I consider to be standard use, eg, checking emails, surfing websites and toddling around the android market (handily provided). No rear camera means that the device is not particularly useful for any form of photography but a reasonably good quality front camera allows for video calling (though I confess, I have not yet attempted to use this function)
The real surprise for me was the WiFi. Suprisingly good range and quality. Living in very large home, I am accustomed to wireless devices only really working correctly in the rooms immediately surrounding the router. The tabtronics however, works all over my home with only a slight deterioration in speed at the furthest reaches. A pleasant discovery.
The addition of the usb connectors makes the device quite flexible for transporting files from my laptop to it’s internal storage and whilst space is at a premium, I have nonetheless been able to put a feature length movie and a full music album across to it before it points out that I’ve been a cheapskate and have no memory left.
All in all, this device is great in it’s own right. I suspect it wouldn’t stack up too well against the Samsung or Apple tabs but then, if it did, I somehow doubt it would be available for such a low price! Well worth the price, I’m not at all disappointed but I can say that it has created a stronger desire in me to see the higher end devices and thanks to seeing the possibilities of a tablet computer, I would now be vastly more inclined to consider a higher price range brand which would previously have been dismissed.
Please note that even ordering from France, the device was delivered rapidly and well packed. The vendor responded rapidly to my enquiries concerning delivery and provided tracking numbers. I would wholeheartedly recommend this device to someone who seeks as I did, a first foot into the tablet waters coupled with a natural revulsion of spending a small fortune on something one is not guaranteed to appreciate.

|Why pay more!!!!,
Bought this for a christmas gift and it arrived within 48 hours of ordering. Now I’m not very technically minded sadly, however this is one piece of kit I’ve already recommend to many. So much cheaper than many tablet pcs on the market and had expandable storage through a micro SD card. Screen is a good size, and doesn’t require a heavy touch to operate. Loving this so much I think my other half will be lucky if it makes it under the tree!!!!
