At last an HTC Phone that looks good and performs even better!, 8 Nov 2011

This review is from: HTC Sensation XL with Beats Audio Sim Free Smartphone (Electronics)

I’ve had most HTC smartphones over the last few years and have, unfortunately sent most of them back because of poor design with respect to receiver and audio performance as well as the all-important battery life.

I’m pleased to report the new XL version of the Sensation series really is extremely good and has none of the typical HTC failings present on previous offerings from the company.

I was first attracted to it because of its extra large screen size, (but not a massive increase in actual overall phone body size), eight megapixel camera and attractive visual design. Provided they had sorted out the receive sensitivity for the main receiver (and indeed Bluetooth) then it should be as good as it appears in the reviews. I’m pleased to say they have (as indeed on the Sensation XE). Having owned the unit for a week I’m still very impressed and would recommend it to anyone who is looking for an alternative to the iPhone which I also use (4S).

Don’t let the fact that it “only” uses a single core 1.5GHz processor either. It’s plenty fast enough and appears every bit as quick as the iPhone 4S and no noticeable difference in comparison to the HTC Sensation XE (or indeed the Samsung Galaxy S11).

Audio is good with superb clarity through the earphone jack. Using Beats audio profile or not, the Sensation series has better audio for driving headphones than the Samsung Galaxy S11.

Criticisms? The biggest complaint is the lack of additional memory, with the phone offering a maximum of 16GB of internal fixed storage. This may sound a lot but with a reasonable amount of images, music and indeed video clips, 16GB really isn’t enough. Do bear this in mind if this is important to you and would ask HTC to bring an updated model out with the additional MicroSD slot fitted to take additional memory.

Whilst the screen resolution is not as good as the sensation or XE variant, it is still very acceptable with excellent brightness and clarity, even outdoors. Because of its size, the screen makes it far easier for web browsing, e-mail, photo browsing and of course video.

The 720p maximum video recording size is also a pity but again it’s still acceptable, just odd that they didn’t offer the 1080p as per most of the other top end smartphones seem to offer these days.

The back of the unit is a kind of satin finish alloy look which whilst looks good, is slippery in the hand and because of the slightly larger width of the phone I can see it slipping out onto the floor. That would be a shame….

Otherwise an excellent device, leaving a good impression with everyone that’s seen it in use and one that will stay in my pocket a little longer. In short, a mini-HTC Flyer for your pocket. (Which I also happen to own – me a techno junkie? Never!)
